On this page

With approx. 32,700 burial plots across 30.8 ha, a search without reliable location information is difficult to plan. First make sure that the cemetery is Nordfriedhof on Ungererstraße: Alter Nordfriedhof is a different cemetery in Munich.

Understanding a grave reference

References such as 025-4-2, 057-U3-5, “Mauer links” or “Urnenhalle Süd” identify a burial section or a position within the cemetery system; they are not geographic coordinates.

The official PDF on the cemetery map page helps place burial sections and paths in context, but it has no name search. If a reference is incomplete or its notation is unclear, ask the cemetery administration to interpret it before travelling.

Searching for a grave yourself

If you have a grave reference

  1. Copy the complete reference without changing its notation.
  2. Open or save the official PDF map.
  3. Locate the relevant burial section first, then use the row and number within that section.
  4. Check the seasonal opening hours and choose a suitable access point on the interactive map.

If you only have a name

Contact the cemetery administration before visiting and provide as much of the following as possible:

  • the deceased person’s full name,
  • year of birth and death, if known,
  • approximate date of burial,
  • alternative spellings of the name,
  • any older grave reference, directions or photograph.

This portal does not maintain a public grave register and cannot replace official location information. Do not expect to locate a grave by name alone across the grounds.

Grave search by GraveStay

If you cannot locate the grave yourself, GraveStay can carry out the search on site. At minimum, provide the name as it appears on the memorial. Copy any existing grave reference exactly; even an incomplete location clue may help narrow the search.

Result and later visits

After a successful search, you receive photographs and precise geographic coordinates. Keep the grave reference as well: the PDF explains the cemetery’s section system, while the coordinates record the specific location for a later visit.

Payment and refunds

Full payment is made before the search begins. If it is certain that the grave is in the stated cemetery but GraveStay cannot locate it, the payment is refunded. No refund is made in other cases.
